Olive oil ‘con’ hits South Australia | News.com.au

Media_httpresources1n_cyzjr

IT SEEMS that oils ain’t oils – even if the label says so.

Imported olive oils being marketed as extra virgin – the purest and healthiest form of olive oil – have been tested to show they are actually made up of cheaper oils like sunflower or canola.

There are even oils shipped from Europe and Asia and sold as cooking oil which contain refined lamp oil.

Australian Olive Association (AOA) has also highlighted that olive oil labelled as “light” is misleading.

Association SA president Richard Whiting said the olive oil currently in supermarkets was deceiving customers.

“Imported product is not what it says on the label,” he said.

“Also people think oil labelled as ‘light’ means it is healthier, when it is actually only light on the good stuff; antioxidants and flavonoid polyphenols. I don’t know what else is a bigger con.”

He said it put pressure on honest Australian growers to compete, because the price of oil had more than halved in the past decade.

“There are shipments from overseas of extra virgin olive oil which are half the price because they are made up of other oils.

WHITE is the new black at Brisbane’s Alma Park Zoo.

Three albino wallabies were welcomed to the zoo late last year and the Tasmanian-born curiosities Jack Frost, Narcissa and Storm are now ready to meet Queensland.

Alma Park Zoo curator Heather Hesterman said the wallabies were a fantastic addition to the zoo’s Walk-thru Wallaby exhibit.

“The biggest drawcard is the curiosity people have,” she said. “It’s such an unusual sighting… they have that whole wow factor.”

Eight-year-old girl saves brothers in runaway car | News.com.au

Media_httpresources1n_qiigs

A LITTLE girl has been hailed as a hero after leaping into a runaway car to save her two younger brothers.

Laura Pickett’s mum, Jill, accidentally left the handbrake off on returning to the family’s Doncaster home from shopping, the Herald Sun reported.

She went inside, but as Laura, 8, got out she noticed movement.

She turned and realised to her horror that the car was rolling away down the steep driveway, with her brothers, Luke, 6, and Tyson, 5, still sitting inside.

Thinking quickly, she ran after the car, leapt inside, and pulled on the handbrake to stop it.

Laura said her brothers were crying. But she didn’t have time to cry.

“I was scared, but I didn’t cry until the car had stopped,” Laura said.

“Then I started crying because it had never happened before.”

Media_httpresources3n_gbmeu

AUSTRALIAN shares have plunged more than 3 per cent lower today as the never-ending eurozone crisis has entered dangerous new territory.

Italy, the eighth largest economy in the world is in debt of $2.2tn. Overnight, rates on Italian bonds rose past 7 per cent. When Ireland, Greece and Portugal hit this 7 per cent mark – they needed to be bailed out. But Italy is “too big to bail” and the possible contagion effect from a failure of Italy is causing global markets to fall.

Other news spooking markets is that French and German officials are exploring the idea of a smaller eurozone, sparking fears that this could be the start of a eurozone breakup.

Remembrance Day 11/11/11 | News.com.au

Media_httpresources1n_gsncp

AS Australia loses more of its best and bravest to the war in Afghanistan, the RSL says this Remembrance Day is as important to the nation as Armistice Day was at the end of World War I.

RSL president Jock Statton said Australians should pause to remember the recent sacrifices of their armed forces and think of those men and women fighting overseas in today’s conficts as the clock strikes 11 on the 11th day of the 11th month.

“Today there are still servicemen and women serving around the world, and unfortunately some being killed in action,” Mr Statton, a Vietnam War veteran, said.

“Remembrance Day is just as important in 2011 as we pause for a minute’s silence and reflection as we remember and pay our respects to those servicemen and women who died or suffered for the Australian cause in all wars and armed conflicts.”
