In the countdown to the highly anticipated release of MIB3 on May 24, Pitbull – AKA Armando Christian Pérez – has performed its theme song.

The Cuban hip hop star has taken to the stage in Cancun to perform Back In Time, adorned appropriately in a black suit.

THERE are likely tens of billions of planets circling red dwarfs in our galaxy that may have the right conditions for sustaining life, according to a new estimate.

The finding, announced by European astronomers today, adds to the growing body of evidence that so-called super-Earths are ubiquitous in habitable zones of the cosmos.

Faint and cool compared to the Sun, red dwarfs account for 80 per cent of all the stars in the Milky Way. Using a planet-hunting instrument called the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) in Chile, astronomers found other worlds orbiting two out of five of such stars.

“Our new observations with HARPS mean that about 40 per cent of all red dwarf stars have a super-Earth orbiting in the habitable zone where liquid water can exist on the surface of the planet,” Xavier Bonfils, the leader of the European Southern Observatory team, said.

“Because red dwarfs are so common – there are about 160 billion of them in the Milky Way – this leads us to the astonishing result that there are tens of billions of these planets in our galaxy alone,” he added.

Zachory Berta, a researcher with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who was not involved in the study, said the new finding agrees with recent observations from NASA’s Kepler telescope, which has been detecting an increasing number of small planets around small stars.

“What makes me most excited about this result is what it means for our chances of detecting life on a planet other than Earth orbiting a star other than the Sun,” Berta said in an email.

“The more habitable planets we find around nearby red dwarfs, the better our odds for truly being able to detect life on another world in our galaxy,” he added.

But researchers involved in the study cautioned that red dwarfs themselves could create hostile conditions for the planets that orbit them.

“The habitable zone around a red dwarf, where the temperature is suitable for liquid water to exist on the surface, is much closer to the star than the Earth is to the Sun,” Stephane Udry, a member of the European team.

“But red dwarfs are known to be subject to stellar eruptions or flares, which may bathe the planet in X-rays or ultraviolet radiation, and which may make life there less likely.”

THE International Criminal Court has convicted a Congolese warlord of using child soldiers, a verdict hailed as a legal landmark in the fight against impunity for the world’s most serious crimes.

Human rights advocates said the guilty verdicts against Thomas Lubanga – the first judgment in the court’s 10-year history – should stand as a clear deterrent to armies around the world not to conscript children.

“In this age of global media, today’s verdict will reach warlords and commanders across the world and serve as a strong deterrent,” the UN’s special representative for children and armed conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy, said.

Actress and activist Angelina Jolie watched the verdicts from the court’s public gallery and called them a victory for former child soldiers.

“This is their day – where these children will feel there is no impunity for what happened to them, for what they suffered,” Jolie said.

Lubanga will be sentenced following a hearing that will be scheduled later this year. He faces a maximum of life imprisonment.

The judgment came at a time when the court is under scrutiny for its inability to arrest key war crimes suspects and its impotence in not being able to intervene in the bloody conflict raging in Syria.

The court was catapulted into the limelight last week by the viral video Kony 2012, which highlighted how it still has not had Ugandan rebel Joseph Kony arrested nearly seven years after indicting him for crimes including using child soldiers, murder and torture.

IT SEEMS that oils ain’t oils – even if the label says so.

Imported olive oils being marketed as extra virgin – the purest and healthiest form of olive oil – have been tested to show they are actually made up of cheaper oils like sunflower or canola.

There are even oils shipped from Europe and Asia and sold as cooking oil which contain refined lamp oil.

Australian Olive Association (AOA) has also highlighted that olive oil labelled as “light” is misleading.

Association SA president Richard Whiting said the olive oil currently in supermarkets was deceiving customers.

“Imported product is not what it says on the label,” he said.

“Also people think oil labelled as ‘light’ means it is healthier, when it is actually only light on the good stuff; antioxidants and flavonoid polyphenols. I don’t know what else is a bigger con.”

He said it put pressure on honest Australian growers to compete, because the price of oil had more than halved in the past decade.

“There are shipments from overseas of extra virgin olive oil which are half the price because they are made up of other oils.

At A Glance………..
Dr. Christine Horner, a board certified general- and plastic surgeon, shares her extensive knowledge about breast cancer—its causes and its cures, and the pro’s and con’s of various screening methods
There are many all-natural cancer-prevention strategies, and research shows that most of them can cut your risk in half. Consequently, by implementing multiple strategies, you can virtually eliminate your risk of cancer as well as other chronic disease
Your diet is the one of the best ways to either feed or prevent cancer. Processed foods, soft drinks, red meat from CAFO-raised animals, trans fats, all forms of sugar, and any food containing or contaminated with xenoestrogens promote cancer growth. Plant foods, particularly cruciferous vegetables and flax seed, as well as many herbs and spices are cancer-preventive
Healthy fats of particular importance for cancer prevention are omega-3 and omega-9, which effectively slow down tumor growth in estrogen-sensitive cancers such as breast-, prostate- and colon cancers
